Science Fiction has been an inspiration for a long time. Star Trek for example has been, and is, an inspiration for many. And Science Fiction is important. Just look at this video of Nichelle Nichols talking about her meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

How much quality Science Fiction is produced varies a great deal. There is a misconception out there that sci-fi doesn't sell, at least not intelligent sci-fi without big explosions and action sequences. So Star Trek is now blockbuster Hollywood productions without the social consciousness of previous efforts.
